Joining Procedures and Costs

We require that each boy interested in joining the Troop attend three troop meetings to be certain that he feels comfortable with the ideals of scouting, the interest of the troop, and the boys who are already members. Since our troop strongly believes that scouting is not just a “boy program”, but rather a family program, the boy’s parent(s) must also attend these meetings. This also allows the Scouts and Scouters (adults) to become acquainted with the boy and his family.

After the third meeting, if the potential scout would like to join our Troop registration forms will be given to complete for both parent and scout. It is our Troop policy that at least one parent be registered as a member of the Troop Committee. A new BSA regulation states that new adult registration will require social security numbers to be used during a background check. Fees will vary year to year based on BSA National Fees.  The initial registration fees must be paid in full at the time of registration.

Since the Troop operation costs of $1500 to $2000 per year are not entirely covered by dues and Do-Dads funds, there are normally one to three fund-raisers each year. At least one of these will be designated as a mandatory attendance item.

In addition to Troop dues, each Patrol establishes Patrol dues to help defray the costs of Patrol activities or the replacement of Patrol equipment. The Patrol Leader is the custodian of these funds and turns them over to his successor. There are two additional sources of costs in the Scouting program: the uniform and the outings.

Uniform

The Scout is expected to purchase his own uniform consisting of the official short sleeve shirt, with normal patches, pants, belt, and Scout socks. Either short pants or long pants may be worn. The Official Boy Scout Handbook should be considered a part of the uniform and should be brought to all meetings and campouts.  For more information about Uniforms, click here.

Outings and Activities

The costs of the outings are not covered in Troop or Patrol dues. Each boy and parent attending an outing must pay his share of the costs. In general, costs for food will run $10 – $15 and costs for permits, campground fees, transportation, and activities run $3 – $15. Backpack trips usually run $8 – $10, while base camps usually run $15 – $25. Summer camp is a one week outing and costs from $250 – $300.

Fundraisers

There are various fundraisers offered by the Troop and Council. By default, all fundraisers benefit the entire Troop. Occasionally, the Troop Committee elects to allow funds raised by each boy on a particular fundraiser to go into an “individual” account. These funds are to be used only for approved Scouting events such as Summer Camp or regular outings.  For more information on Troop Fundraiser click this link.
